CPI data show that some governments have failed to protect their citizens from corruption, whether from the misuse of public funds, bribery, or making decisions without informing the public.
Transparency International has warned that the protests going around the world are in many cases triggered by corruption and economic instability; citizens believe that the leaders and social institutions of their countries are not sufficiently transparent and accountable.
The index reflects the situation in 183 countries and territories on a scale of 0 (highest level of corruption) to 10 (lowest level of corruption). The index reflects the data used in 17 surveys that measure factors such as the execution of anticorruption laws, access to information and conflicts of interest.
New Zealand followed by Finland and Denmark are the least corrupt countries. Somalia and North Korea are the most corrupt.
